Numerical Prediction of Quasi-Static Compression, Indentation Impact and Shock Loading Behaviour of Aluminium Foam Using Idealized Cell Geometry

نویسندگان

چکیده

Three-dimensional model of closed cell foam based on idealized geometry is developed and used to study its response under quasi-static compression, impact shock loading. Foams with a wide range densities corresponding morphologies are modeled. Geometry the unit cells construct 3-D experimentally measured sizes wall thicknesses. The numerical validated against determined stress vs. strain relationship, depth indentation, indentation force, total deformation loading etc. A comprehensive insight obtained about local failure mechanisms such as edge bending, buckling tearing. This knowledge can provide critical inputs in design foam-based absorbers.

Quasi-static Indentation and Compression after Impact Damage Growth Monitoring Using Microfocus X-ray Computed Tomography

1 Introduction The susceptibility of carbon fibre-polymer matrix composites to low velocity impact damage has a direct effect on the residual in-plane compressive strength [1]. Whilst the general understanding of damage caused by impact and post-impact compression is understood from studying failed specimens, the damage evolution process is still not well understood. This is largely due to the ...

Indentation of aluminium foam at low velocity

The indentation behaviour of aluminium foams at low velocity (10m/s ∼ 30m/s) was investigated both in experiments and numerical simulation in this paper. A flat-ended indenter was used and the force-displacement history was recorded. The Split Hopkinson Pressure bar was used to obtain the indentation velocity and forces in the dynamic experiments. Because of the low strength of the aluminium fo...

Contact Behaviour of Composite Laminate under Quasi-Static Indentation Load

A viable solution to the ever-demanding weight-saving target in aerospace industry is the replacement of conventional engineering alloys with composite materials in primary structures. A major concern to the effective use of composite laminates is the substantial reduction in the compressive strength when the contact force has exceeded the delamination threshold load (DTL). This paper focuses o...

Quasi-Static Numerical Simulation of Missile Staging

In this study, the missile staging process by implementing a side-injected jet is simulated numerically. The problem is considered to be axisymmetric and the thin shear layer approximation of Navier-Stokes equations along with an algebraic turbulence model is used in a quasi-static form for the calculations. The free stream corresponds to a very high altitude flight condition with a Mach number...
